All about Paul...

OK, so Walt calls the other night and asks Paul how things are going and if he has had his surgery yet.  He goes on to say that he reads our blog all the time and never sees anything about him, at least this is what Paul told me.  I felt really bad but Walt its not my fault.  Paul tells me not to talk about him on the blog, at least nothing medical or real personal.  I told Paul that from now on Im going to post about everybody in this family, after all it is the Barlow Family Blog.

To start Ill say that in the last 5 or 6 weeks Ive hardly seen him.  First Paul had to take a full week trip to Kodiak (Sun to Sun) for work.  This was shortly after we had spent a week in kodiak all together.  Then he had to go to fairbanks for awhile, then Anchorage, then Fairbanks again, then Juneau, then Ketchikan, then Fairbanks again.  Uhhhhhhh he has been worked hard and spread thin but is enjoying a little time off for now.  He does have to go to fairbanks again sometime soon and probably some other places.

Next I will talk about surgery.  Paul has had bad stomach problems for a long time and found out not to long ago that his flipper  or valve thing between the stomach and the esophogus does not open and close properly.  They recomended surgery.  He is doing a new not so invasive surgery that would require specialist to be flown in to evaluate the doctor who is doing this.  He will be the first on the peninsula to have this done.  He is tentavly scheduled for Dec 7th.  We really hope this helps him as he needs to get off the perscription nexium that is only causing worse problems.  He will basically have to eat baby food for 2 weeks, no fruits, nothing tomatoe based among a long list of dont eats.  He cannot lift anything over 5 pounds which will really prove to be difficult for him durring work.  I will be watching him like a hawk!

Thats whats going on in the life of Paul for now, but I will keep you posted from now on:)

Does anyone else have a problem not finding the spell check when their posting????  It drives me nuts

118...

Since my last post I decided to do 30 injections as opposed to 23. I have done really well with little or no hunger or cravings. Today actually was my last injection. This morning I weighed 118, remember I started out 137, thats 19 pounds! I may lose another half pound or more tomorrow. After that you dont want to lose or gain 2 pounds for 3 weeks. I found out that I cannot cheat at all with sugar and carbs as it will destroy what Ive done the last 30 days. No potatoes, stuffing, or pumpkin pie for me this Thanksgiving. I will make do after 3 more days of my 500 calorie diet to allow the HCG to leave my system I will be able to eat 1,500 calories. The conditions are no sugar, carbs and artificial sweetners of course. I can have stevia. Im going to try and make a pumpkin cheesecake with it. Im also going to make a cranberry cream sauce to go in my turkey if possible. When I say no sugar Im not talking about naturally occurring ones in fruits and vegis. I will finally be able to eat breakfast! After 3 weeks I will gradually reintroduce healthy carbs back into my diet. It just take that 3 weeks for your body to adjust to its new weight and reset the hypothalamus gland thingy ma bobber:)

As for noticable changes in the way I look... My face is thinner for sure, my butt dissappeared somewhere(wish I would of measured), my neck shrunk an inch and a half, 4 inches of my thighs, almost 4 inches of my waist, yes garsh darnet the padding above my chest is gone which I guess is a good thing but it added a little extra umphhh if you know what I mean. I can wear cute little shoes that I couldnt wear before without making my thighs seem extra monsterous (is that a word). NO belly bulge or love handles! Now I can wear nice form fitting shirts without the tire:) I fit into the clothes that I have kept in a box for the last 4 years. Its hard to really pinpoint a size as it varies by brand. Before I could wear an 8 in Levis but a 10 in American eagle and most Gap jeans. Now I know for sure I could buy a 4 in levis(misses) if not a 2.

I have to admit I have not bought any new clothes because I want to wait awhile to make sure I can keep this off. However I am tempted to at least buy one pair of cute jeans as my old 6 and 8s look like Im carrying a load in the back after 10 minutes of putting them on.

I am putting everything in place to succeed in keeping my weight loss. I just read Master your Metabolism by the gal off biggest loser. I think she really hit the nail on the head with that book. I read a lot of books on health and weight loss and hers is one of my favorites. Its all about your hormones-metabolism and what throws them off and causes us to gain even when were doing whats right. I also read a lot about Fiber and monounsaturated fats which is essential in weight loss and health. But you have to get those hormones going the right direction!!!!!!

I know it sounds like I have put a lot of focus on me and this diet but I do have to say that Ive recognized that changing the outside does NOT make you happy!!!! I still look in the mirror and think uhhhh I still have so far to go. I found myself to be still so discontent. It makes really realize that I need to focus more on the Lord and not on me in order to have joy.

Oh yeah and I know I spelled a lot of things wrong but I cannot find the spellcheck anymore!

Update...

So far I have lost 15 pounds wellll 14.4, but by tomorrow morning it will be at least 15 I hope. I have done really well with only one relapse on Friday night. All I had was a few sample cups of soup and a few samples of dessert. It was a church party, we had a soup and pie contest. It was difficult mentally not to eat a lot more than I did. I won the soup contest with a sausage and bean soup. I won a $50 gift certificate to a nice resturuant!!!

I really dont "feel" thinner but Paul says he notices. I have lost over 3 inches off my belly, almost 3 inces off my thighs, last I checked an inch off my neck and I didnt really measure anything else. I would still like to lose quite a bit from my thigh area but Im ready to be done. Im only doing a total of 23 injections. After that I have 3 weeks of no carbs and sugar to stabalize the weight that I have lost, which is the most critical part of this diet. My last injection is Friday. Yes Thanksgiving falls into the no carbs no sugar, and yes I will cheat slightly:) Im going to make this chocolate cake...

Its not the end of the world I still have December to bake yummy stuff with sugar:)

Mercy and Justina update...

They are both in iceskating and doing really well. Justina is picking it up fast and will be in her first show and group competition this year. She is a natural! Mercy is fearless and determined and is the best in her class of course:)

As for school, Mercy is starting to read sentences and is doing well in math. Justina is still progressing even though she hates school and has quite the attitude. Im doing an incentive chart and it seems to be working thus far. Justina is working towards a full length mirror with a white frame that she will decerate with jewels and put in her room. Mercy is just working and does not know what for.

Halloween is coming up and this year I decided to actually buy nice costumes. They are very excited. Justina is going to be twister, yes the game. Mercy is going to be Dorothy. They are going to a skate party so I am going to make liitle red sparkley slip covers for Mercys skates. I can't wait to post pics when all is over:)

Before I forget...

Diet Update:

Well I did not start on Tuesday like I posted. I went to the Doctors and had really high blood pressure and a fever so he decided that he first wanted blood tests. Blood tests came out good, so I started on Friday. You "load" for 2 days and then you start eating 500 calories of only certain things. Loading is eating whatever the heck you want and a lot of it:) So Sunday I officially started the 500 calorie end of it.

To clear things up my scale was off (I knew this but somehow forgot). In order to give you my accurate results I must tell you that after my loading days I was 137.2, I now have a very accurate scale (well as accurate as you can get). I never was 139 I guess but oh well I could stand to loose a few thighs, I mean pounds.

After only 2 days, drum role please....I have lost 5.6 pounds. It will taper off very soon to only be about 2/3 pounds a day. But for now Im pretty amazed. Dont get me wrong, I know if I got off the diet and started eating like I was I would gain it back just as fast. Then you say "why even do the diet if you would just gain it back?". I say if you want to know the answer to that question you would have to read about the diet yourself because I dont want to explain it:)

Im hoping to back up my weight loss with inches lost so I will keep anybody who cares updated.

A little humor to brighten your day!

The boss was concerned that his employees weren’t giving him enough respect, so he tried the old fashioned method of persuasion: He brought in a sign that said “I’m the Boss” and taped it to his door. After lunch, he noticed someone had taped another note under his. “Your wife called. She wants her sign back!”

Another Diet...

Remember when I was talking about how I was working my butt off to lose weight at the club? Well I had lost like 16 pounds in like 5 months. Unfortunately...drum roll please...I gained about 9 back due to not exercising at all and eating a few to many sugary treats again. Soooo here I am again at 139 (and gaining) and my pants are shrinking. Ohhhhhh does it ever end???

I've decided to do something before I get back into the gym full time. I am going to try something called the HCG Diet for 40 days http://hcgdietinfo.com/. It sounds crazy at first glance but not only have I read hours of material and different testimonies (good and bad) but I have witnessed first hand what this diet is doing for people. My neighbor has lost I believe 46 pounds, 30 of it was in the first 40 day treatment. Not 30# in water or muscle but fat that stores itself in all those lovely places like hips, abs etc... This diet resets your metabolism and hopefully afterwards you eat healthy and exercise like you should and I intend to do so:) I have another neighbor on it as well and in the first week she could grab her once tight shrinking pants at the hips and pull them out and shake them. I saw one lady who last year looked like she was packn on the pounds like crazy in the lower body, this year I saw her and she weighed less than I did and looked like a completely new person. Incredible difference! They also have a lot of energy which I could desperately use:)

I start tomorrow and I cant wait, Ive been preparing mentally for this for weeks. Ive decided to post about in hopes it will help me be somewhat accountable and push me to keep going:) I will periodically post my happenings while on this diet. Yes, I am going to take pics every week to see if I look any different but I don't intend to post any unless I look totally cute and thin at the end of it all (haha). Even then it would be a strictly girls only link:)

Dont bother putting anything annoying such as "if you just eat healthy and excersise", or "you will just gain all the weight back and then some", or "it doesnt sound healthy". I have read all of it, good and bad, not to mention Ive said it all myself (ha)! I know very well that I can go back to stepping, biking, weightlifting and eating well when this is all said and done because Ive done it, and if I dont then I will be fat again, such is life. This diet has been around for like 50+ years with a lot of positive results and Im going to give it a very dedicated try:) I will keep ya posted!

Random thought...

I was just thinking how gross it is that hotels and the like don't wash their bedspreads. Really, can you imagine what kinda yuckies are on them? It seems so unsanitary!!

Our Kodiak Trip...

We went walking on a river/beach when I told Justina to look for bear tracks as this was a popular bear hangout. Just then we heard this long grunt and then Justina says "here are some bear tracks" within seconds of eachother. Was I scared you ask...I was shaking like I always do when I think Im going to encounter a bear! I yelled for Paul franticly to walk us back to the truck but not before I got a couple of pics:)

This was one of the views from our B&B.

Anybody ever watch Deadliest Catch on Discovery??? This is one of the popular crabbin boats on the show that was parked in the harbor. I actually dont care for the captain as he is crude and foul but it was neat to see somthn that we have watched many times on Discovery:)

We saw this 3 year old bear before we went to catch the ferry back home. He was hard to get a picture of as he was on the move and then he kept ducking down in the brush to eat his fish.
If you want to see the rest of my Kodiak pics heres a link... http://picasaweb.google.com/carmellbarlow/Kodiak#

Top Ten Bottom Ten Part 2

Alright I will finally finish this up...

These will of course be my bottom ten places to live. This is easy as there is a lot more than 10 places I would not want to live!

1. Africa -(anywhere) I posted mostly states in the US on the last post but I find it appropriate to mention that I would not live anywhere on this continent! In fact just leave me out of anywhere that thinks spider legs are a delicacy.

2. Asia - (anywhere) Yes, there are beautiful things to see as I suppose there are in Africa but to many people and about 100 other reasons to not live there.

3. California - Im sure Northern California is nice but its to expensive so it would not be possible for us. As for the rest, never, to hot and not enough fully clothed straight people!

4. Arizona - Tooooooooooo Hot!! I hate dry hot climates, yuk.

5. Texas - Im not going to get into all the reasons I would not live here due to country music videos. I will say that my primary reason for not wanting to EVER live here would be huge spiders that you can see crossing the street and hanging out under shaded trees and the fire ants.

6. Florida - I did not mind the humidity in may at all. The problem I have would be heat, alligators, crocodiles, banana spiders and so on... It seems like warm humid places equals big healthy spiders and other grotesque insects.

7. New Mexico - Heat, gangs, dry

8. New York - I totally want to VISIT upstate NY in the fall, but I never want to live in NY. I dont like NY accents (annoyyyyying to me), to much crime and to much traffic (all kinds of traffic).

9. Ohio - My gosh it just sounds dull and bluh

10. BIG CITIES ANYWHERE!!!! I hate cities!!!

Ok Nancy Im officially done with this subject:)

Top Ten, Bottom Ten... Part 1

Since I like lists Ive been thinking of the top places (states, etc...) I would want to live in and also the the ones I would not. Paul and I as you know tend to move a lot and of course were always tempted with the idea of living somewhere else. Although I really don't think we will leave Alaska its fun to play with the idea of where our next little adventure could be:) Now keep in mind that I am very aware that every place has it pros and cons...

TOP 10: (not necessarily in order)

1: Maine
I think Maine is a lot like Alaska, but with Lobster:) I would love to visit the coastal towns and the fall colors would be beautiful.

2: Kentucky
I love the smell of horses, it makes you want to listen to a really good country song! I also love the idea of rolling green hills and white picket fences with morning dew. Maybe thats just in the movies:) Anybody watch that movie with the zebra that wants to be a race horse??

3: Vermont
October, need I say more.

4: Alaska
I live here, so of course its on my top 10. Everything is pretty much out your backdoor. I love that people spend thousands of dollars to come where I live for a week:) I also love 65 degree summers where you can wear shorts and a tank.

5: Colorado
It would have to be in a small little mountain town far away from Denver. A cute well lets say luxurious cabin with a rock fireplace and big windows with a a view of surrounding mountains, a porch swing to sit and drink hot cocoa and a lot of snow to frolic in.

6: Oregon
I almost hesitated to put down Oregon but hey my BFF lives there:) I was born and raised there and there is still a lot of beautiful places I have not seen. I love the fall more than any other season and Oregon has a lot of apple and pear orchards as well as pumpkin farms. I really miss that.

7: Montana
In the hilly part not flat. Ive never been there only heard things, mostly good. I would want to live somewhere where there was not very many people, lots of farm animals, and cold winters that make you want to have soup and warm rolls for dinner:) At least in the movies they portray gorgeous sunsets (of course their probably filming somewhere else?). The thought of it makes you want to buy a pair of wranglers and some fashionable cowgirl boots and do a little country dance:)

8: Utah (big sigh): No offense to those who make there home there but this would be the last on my top ten and really if Paul was out of the picture (which he never will be) i would not put this as an option. My impression of the small portion of Utah that Ive seen quite honestly depresses me. Its to flat and dry for me!!! Im putting this here for the sole reason that family is there, I know that family is important but being an only child Ive always been a little selfish and have always put my own wants and desires before my own family. But... I really like Pauls parents and his brothers and sisters. I would to go to all of Nancy's parties:) I would drive with Emily to get her hair done in Idaho if she wanted, of course I would have to drive as I know she is insane. I could gab with Barb for hours:) My kids I know would enjoy the company of Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. Paul misses thanksgiving dinner and fishing with his dad at that horrible spider infested place. So as it is a part of my husband then so its a part of me:)

(when I went fishn there I looked down and the ground was covered with black spiders, literly the ground was moving)

9: Ok at this point Im leaving the Country, there really isn't many other states in the US that I would consider top ten material... (If I think of any I will edit this post)
Ireland
Again this is based on movies:) I love the way they talk and the countryside seems soooo beautiful. Of course this rivals somewhere in the swiss alps with a guy that blows a big long horn or somthn. My geography is horrible at best:)

10: Canada
Wherever the heck Road to Avonlee (?spelling) and AnnE of Green Gables was. Somewhere across from Maine like outside Halifax somewhere. Of course I would like to jump back a hundred years:)

OK so part 2 will be the top ten places I would hate to live...coming soon:)

I would love to know others top ten places to live so if you have a blog please post your top 10:)

To my BFF...

I do not usually use this term, in fact I have never to my knowledge said it out loud. It sounds so young:) Anyways for this special post I will. If you looked at the comments from my last long ago post you will notice that some crazy lady FINALLY posted a comment on my blog. This would be my BFF Jasmine, who kindly reminded me that I have not posted anything on my blog for awhile and she is growing restless. So I want to dedicate this post to her.

I do not use the term BFF lightly, I use it in the most sincere and endearing way imaginable. Just as I am sitting here this very moment thinking about what an incredible friend Jasmine has been to me for the last 6 years , tears are welling up in my eyes.

I wont talk about the first time we met like 10 years ago because for some reason I just don't remember it. Anyhow she apparently thought I was nice and enjoyed sorting cherries with me:) Skip like 4 years and there you have the start of a wonderful God given friendship. She came to our church and we really connected at Bible study. Our husbands became quick friends as well and we loved to hang out and play board games together. I always loved it when we got to go to their house for dinner, she was a much better cook than I could ever hope to be. Things always turned out as long as she had her eye on Andre and the barbecue:)

Our friendship has always been in the Lord. We talk about the Lord, we talk about His Word, we encourage eachother through His Word, and we pray for eachother and our families. Jasmine has always been quick to remind me of Gods Word when Im down, sometimes its convicting, sometimes confirming, other times insightful but always encouraging. I truly believe God has worked many times through her to reach me. I have leaned pretty heavy upon our friendship for the last few years, calling her when Im down or struggling with issues and she has a wonderful way of cheering me up and encouraging me to keep my eyes on the Lord. God gives us special people to be a part of our lives and show us His grace and His love. Jasmine is one of those special people that God allowed into my life for a reason. I hope that whatever years we have left on this earth I can be as much of an encouragement to her as she has been to me.

On another note...I have been in Alaska now for 2 and a half years and its been a rare occasion for us to not talk at least once during the week:) It really shows what a committed friend she has been! But let me tell ya, she wont go to Maui with me. CRAZY!!! Oh yeah and I even offered to give her a ticket!! (Big Sigh) This of course is not because she doesn't want to... I have to find a way to convince her husband that she deserves to leave for a week with her BFF and get a tan while drinking VIRGIN pina colodas. Wish me luck:)

Anyways...Jasmine you are the dearest and bestess (is that a word) friend!!! Talk to ya soon:)

PS. PLEASE ANDRE!

Icecream truck in Alaska...

I believe this was the first time we have seen the icecream truck here... It was about 58 degrees and about to rain but all the kids were excited!

My last day...

Today is my last day of being in my 20's! Tomorrow I turn the big 3 0. Theres a part of me thats excited about it, and the other part of me feels a little scared of some major health issue due to "old age", no offense to those of you that are MEGA old or anything:) I just don't want everything to start breaking down on me. For my birthday I will be getting ready for a yard sale, which I will be having on Paul's birthday (and Lulu's?) Friday. Paul has already apologized for not doing or thinking of anything special to do on this big birthday of mine, sniffle sniffle, but he has been crazy busy with work stuff and I honestly completely understand. Of course I did remind him like a month ago, and he did go fishing plenty, soooo I think Im going to decide to be upset about it. In fact since Im not having a birthday party I will have a pity party instead! He could of at least helped the kids to do something special!!!!! Ok the more Im talking this out the more mad and hurt I am. In fact Im going to calculate about how many hours he spent out fishing when he could of been planning something with the girls for Mommy's birthday. Wellllll its not like I am doing anything special the next day for his. So really I guess it doesnt matter, its just another day. But I think the kids would of enjoyed doing something. I better stop now:)

A little humor to brighten your day!

For weeks a five-year-old child kept telling his kindergarten teacher about the baby sister or brother that was expected at his house. One day the mother allowed the child to feel the movements of the unborn baby. The five-year-old was obviously impressed, but made no comment. Moreover, he stopped telling the teacher about the awaiting event. Finally the teacher sat the child on her lap and said, “Lucas, whatever has become of that baby brother or sister you were expecting at home?“Lucas burst into tears and confessed, “I think Mommy ate it!”
